Frequently Asked Tech Questions

SolidWorks Vista Version FAQ's: please note the Vista version is available through subscription support.

The pre-release of SolidWorks 2007 for Microsoft® Windows Vista® is now available. SolidWorks Subscription Service customers may log into the SolidWorks Customer Portal at: http://www.solidworks.com/customerportal and click Download Software and Updates to access the update.

Note: This is a Pre-Release version of SolidWorks. Hardware-accelerated OpenGL video card drivers are not yet available from vendors such as NVIDIA and ATI. Therefore, graphics performance with SolidWorks running on the Windows Vista® operating system is slower than with SolidWorks running on Windows XP. SolidWorks on Vista uses the software OpenGL drivers that are installed with the Microsoft® Windows Vista® operating system. If it is known in advance that you will be working with large assemblies or complex parts, it is recommended that SolidWorks 2007 is used on Windows XP in these situations.

What can generate an error 1722 during the installation of SolidWorks 2007 SNL Manager?

If a version of the HASP 4 Aladdin dongle driver is already installed on the computer then this will need to be manually removed before the installation of the SNL manager can complete.  If you place a USB dongle into a computer connected to the network the operating system will automatically install the HASPHL dongle driver from the Microsoft Website which will include a portion of the HASP4 dongle driver.   This issue is already reported to development under SPR 336242.  Please refer to the SPR Look-up Subscription Services site for the latest status of this SPR . (http://www.solidworks.com/pages/services/subscription/ServicePackMaintenanceNotes.html)

To address this problem:
1)     Remove the dongle from the machine
2)     Download the latest version of the HASP4 dongle driver from:
http://www.aladdin.com/support/hasp/hasp4/enduser.asp
Select: HASP Device Driver Commandline Installation

Extract the files then at a command prompt browse to the location of the files and enter the command:
hinstall -r -kp

3) Download the latest version of the HASP4 dongle driver from:
http://www.aladdin.com/support/hasp/enduser.asp
Select: HASP HL Device Driver Commandline Installation

Extract the files then at a command prompt browse to the location of the files and enter the command:
haspdinst -fr -kp

4) Test the installation of the SNL Manager again.  At the screen titled “SolidNetWork License file Wizard” connect the dongle again.

When will the hot fix be available from Microsoft to reduce file size in SolidWorks 2007 SP1 onwards?

UPDATE: Please note that this hot fix is installed automatically with SolidWorks 2007 SP3.0 or newer. Therefore, there is no need to install the hot fix separately in order to see a reduction in file size with 2007 SP3.0 onwards. Customers running 2007 SP1 or SP2 should refer to the instructions below on installing the hot fix.

The 32-bit version of this hot fix for Windows XP Professional, documented in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 919880 ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;919880 ), has now been made available for general distribution by Microsoft.

The 32-bit versions of the hot fix are attached to this solution in all languages in which it has been issued by Microsoft: Chinese (Simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Czech, German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese (Brazilian), Russian. Please note that this hot fix is supplied and supported by Microsoft. It is being provided by SolidWorks as a convenience to our customers, but questions regarding installation of this hot fix should be referred to Microsoft.

Using SolidWorks 2007 SP1 or newer in conjunction with the hot fix from Microsoft will, in many cases, reduce file size. Models with many configurations typically show the largest reduction in size when saved. However, please note that this hot fix will NOT result in a reduction in the size of all files.

NOTES:

1) The Microsoft Knowledge Base article referenced above specifically indicates that this hot fix is only for FAT file systems and not FAT-32 or NTFS. This is incorrect, since it does apply to FAT-32 and NTFS. Microsoft will edit the article to correct this error.

2) The hot fix for the Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, documented in Solution S-012243, does not currently result in any file size reduction on this operating system in conjunction with SolidWorks 2007 SP1.0 - SP2.2. The fix for this is available in SolidWorks 2007 Service Pack 3.0.
