SolidWorks 2008 Enhancements Overview:

Instant3D: Instant3D helps aid the Engineer or Designer in the design process by providing them with instant dynamic feedback including geometry that may reference the feature being modified. Instant3D provides a new level of design visualization while dramatically reducing the steps needed to complete your design tasks. New face and edge highlighting incorporated with drag handles for unconstrained changes as well as a helpful segmented ruler for more precise numerical control makes design changes easier than ever before.

Streamlined UI/RealViewThe SolidWorks interface has been improved to decrease mouse travel and increase the SolidWorks Window real estate. A new Command Manager layout, “embedded” view display menus and customizable pop-up toolbars increase efficiency and workflow. Getting to commonly used commands will be easier than ever with less mouse travel and clicks.

SolidWorks DimXpertDimXpert allows a user to automatically create geometric dimensions and tolerances according to the ASME Y14.41-2003 3D specification. DimXpert applies the appropriate geometric and plus/minus dimensioning schemes automatically, greatly enhancing the process of detailing your drawings. And, ensures that your models are always fully dimensioned and toleranced.

Design Clipart: If you want to reuse views, blocks, tables and even images from DWG and DXF files or if you want to reuse sketches and features from SolidWorks models and drawings, Design Clipart is the tool to use. Design Clipart “dissects” DWG, DXF and SolidWorks files and extracts data so it is reusable in SolidWorks. The ability to automatically extract views, tables, and images from existing DXF and DWG will help 2D users get their designs into SolidWorks more efficiently than ever.

DriveWorksXpress: DriveWorksXpress allows Engineers and Designers to automate repetitive design tasks and free up valuable time that can then be refocused on high value activities like designing great products. DriveWorksXpress is a design automation tool that automatically generates parts, assemblies and drawings. It allows a company to capture valuable design rules that can then be used to create new products and product variants. With DriveWorksXpress a user can enter design variables in to a simple form and let the software generate the required models and drawings over and over again.

TolAnalyst: TolAnalyst is a tolerance analysis tool that determines the effect that dimensions and tolerances have on parts and assemblies. It allows you to perform worst case tolerance stack up analysis on parts and assemblies and even tells you which tolerances are contributing most to any tolerance stack up issue. TolAnalyst helps ensure that your design meets proper fit and function requirements.

DFMXpress: DFMXpress is an up front validation tool used to identify geometry that is difficult, expensive or impossible to manufacture by conventional machining operations. DFMXpress can help you reduce the time it takes to consult with your machinist by eliminating geometry that may significantly contribute to the cost of manufacture.

Large Assembly Management Tools: Working with large assemblies has never been easier. SolidWorks continues to extend it’s capabilities by offering new sets of high powered tools for large assembly management in 2008 allowing users to work with large assemblies faster than ever. New simplified representation technology allows you to simplify assemblies without the need for configurations and regardless of the assembly structure. New Quick View/Selective Open functionality allows users to quickly view large assemblies and then, on-the-fly, select components to work with without having to load unnecessary components into memory.

COSMOS Design Insight: Design Insight allows the user to easily identify the areas of a design that contribute most to structural integrity. Once these critical areas are identified the engineer or designer can make informed decisions with respect to removing unnecessary material or exploring other design alternatives.

Motion Manager: Assembly motion, Physical Simulation and COSMOS motion have been consolidated under one single keyframe and timeline based UI resulting in a single efficient and easy to use user interface. The new motion manager also supports both motors and springs.
